Chasing the Best Sunset Views in Oswego County, New York

Last updated on January 18, 2026.

One of the best parts about Upstate New York is its natural beauty. Say what you will about tropical locations, but there’s something magical about the sunset views in Oswego County. As the sky turns to shades of red, pink, and orange over Lake Ontario, you’re transported to a far-off place. The water stretches across the horizon, mimicking ocean views. But even from other vantage points, sunsets around Oswego just hit differently. In fact that’s why I have “watch a sunset” on my list of date night ideas in the area.

Enjoy this list of sunset spots around Oswego, New York, listed in the order that the sun travels – east to west.

Vanderkamp — Cleveland, NY

With over 850 acres of sprawling natural land, it’s no surprise that among the trees and hiking trails you can find a beautiful sunset at Vanderkamp. The best spot on the grounds is at Vanderkamp Lake, the large pond in the middle of the cabins and cottages. Although it must be mentioned that the grounds are private and limited to guests who are staying on property or attending an event there. If you are, you can borrow one of the canoes or kayaks to get a truly waterfront view of the sun setting.

North Riding — Cleveland, NY

Nestled among the hills of Cleveland, New York, the giant white barn at North Riding stares off into the orange sunsets. This private venue also serves as an event venue and a spot photographers often rent out for photo shoots. Because the inside of the barn is stunning. In fact, that is where my sister-in-law was married a couple years ago (and the photo below was taken during the evening of the rehearsal). Pair the sunsets with the reds and oranges of the autumn leaves and it’s a view that can’t be beat.

Grace Tyler Estate Winery — Constantia, NY

While not your typical sunset view sinking down into the mountains or water, I had to include this spot. Because just look at how the sky shines in beautiful shades of pink and yellow among the pale blue. On top of the stunning view above, the floral mural on Grace Tyler Estate Winery‘s exterior just adds to the beauty of this scene. Located along the northern shore of Oneida Lake, the winery was established in 2018.

Salmon River Falls — Orwell, NY

One of the best hikes in Upstate New York is also home to one of the best sunsets – if you time it correctly. Salmon River Falls has a short trail that leads from the parking lot to an area above the falls. When the climate is dry, visitors can walk out onto the rocky expanse and get the perfect cotton candy pink sunset view.

But there are two important things to note. First, do not wait until the sun has fully set before you leave. Because you have to walk through the forest along the trail, it gets dark very fast. And visiting hours end at dusk. So soak int he pastel-colored sky for a few minutes. Snap your photos. And then get back to your car.

Secondly, do not go further than the marked area. The restriction zone is restricted for a reason— the cliff over the falls is steep and the current of the water is strong. Respect the signage and stay safe.

Sandy Island State Park — Sandy Creek, NY

It goes without saying that some of the best sunset views in Oswego County are located along the shores of Lake Ontario. Because nothing is greater than watching the sun dip itself into the watery expanse. One of the prime spots to chase sunsets is at Sandy Island Beach State Park. With 17 miles stretching the lake’s shoreline, there is plenty of space to spread your beach towel and take in the views among the sand dunes.

Selkirk Shores State Park — Sandy Creek, NY

Just like its neighbor Sandy Island Beach, Selkirk Shores is another state park on the shore of Lake Ontario with great sunsets. Spend the day hiking, fishing, boating, and more. Then spend the evening staring off into the sunset. Literally.

The Rooftop Lounge — Oswego, NY

You might not expect a restaurant to be on a list of places with the best sunset views. But then again most restaurants don’t have rooftop balconies. Let alone two rooftop balconies. So of course The Rooftop Lounge in the center of Oswego has some unbeatable views as the sun sets over the city. Enjoy the views from either balcony or the panoramic windows of the restaurant. To top it off, the small plates menu, craft cocktails, and whiskey selection are phenomenal.

H. Lee White Maritime Museum — Oswego, NY

From the pier to the lighthouse, Breitbeck Park to H. Lee White Maritime Museum, the northern edge of Oswego’s city has the absolute best sunsets in Upstate New York. Whether you’re enjoying live music on the pier or a festival in the park, you are in for a treat when dusk falls. Even better, make a day of it with a boat tour to the lighthouse and a visit to the maritime museum.
