Chasing Waterfalls in Montour Falls and Watkins Glen, New York

Another day, another waterfall. Unless you’re in Montour Falls. Then a day could include several waterfalls! While nearby Watkins Glen is famous for its series of scenic waterfalls and miles of hiking, there are other beautiful places to explore nearby too. Like the several waterfalls in Montour Falls and surrounding area. And unlike the renowned state park, these waterfalls are visible year-round and mostly free to see.

It’s important to note that none of these falls are safe swimming areas, but make beautiful backdrops to a roadtrip in the Finger Lakes or a cozy picnic.

Shequaga Falls

Located right in the heart of Montour Falls, Shequaga Falls is the centerpiece at the end of Main Street. Really, how many quaint towns can you stroll through while gazing upon a stunning waterfall? And out of all the waterfalls in Montour Falls, this is my favorite.

Shequaga Falls, also spelled Chequaga, is a Native American translation for “tumbling waters”. The waterfall is just one of hundreds in the Finger Lakes carved out by the glaciers during the Ice Age. Shequaga Falls sits along Catharine Creek as it meanders its way to Seneca Lake.

There are two parking spots located in front of the falls, but there is ample street parking also available. A small green space forms the park at the falls, where visitors can play frisbee or have a picnic.

Aunt Sarah’s Falls

North of Shequaga Falls, along the western side of Route 14, is another beautiful waterfall. Aunt Sarah’s Falls is the tallest of the waterfalls in Montour Falls, but with the least ground to explore at the base. If you’re planning to visit Aunt Sarah’s Falls, look for the small pull-off along Route 14, which is big enough for one or two cars. Across the street is another small parking area. A small granite square rock indicates the border of the village of Montour Falls.

Deckertown Falls

Across town along the eastern edge of Montour Falls is Deckertown Falls. A cascading three-tiered fall is visible from the park’s parking lot. But during the warmer seasons, visitors can walk along the trail, following Catlin Mill Creek, to find four more. There is a large parking lot available at the park providing off street parking. History buffs will also enjoy reading a historical marker telling a bit about Seneca Chief Queen Catharine.

Havana Glen

Of all the waterfalls in Montour Falls, Havana Glen is the only waterfall with an entrance fee to the park. At just $3, it’s worth it! But visitors to the park can do more than just chase waterfalls. There are pavilions, a playground, and a full campground across the 40-acre-park.

Hector Falls

Out of all the waterfalls mentioned in this article, it’s important to note that you CANNOT get out of the car to view and photograph Hector Falls. This waterfall is located on the eastern side of Route 414, along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. Due to the high speed of the road and the narrow curves, it is not safe to walk to the falls. For the best view, be on the passenger side of the car traveling north on Route 414. Have your camera ready if you’re hoping to snap a photo!
