Time for another luxury upstate stay, perfect for a girls’ night or a couple’s getaway. Sixteen Elm Heritage Hotel in Trumansburg is a beautiful historic home with 6 luxury suites for travelers. With beautiful period furniture and century-old architecture, the home is as charming as it is historic. Guests can enjoy the cozy amenities on property or take a very short walk into the village for shopping and dining.

About 16 Elm Heritage Hotel

Originally built in 1921 by the Biggs family, the house was modeled after the Governor of Virginia’s Williamsburg home. Prominent local merchants, the Biggs family spent extravagantly when constructing their home. Which is probably one of the reasons it has stood the test of time.

Over the past century, several different owners have lived at the property with their families. When the home celebrated its centennial just a few years ago, the property changed hands once again – this time to its current owner, Jes Seaver. Following up on the efforts of the previous owners (who had been restoring the property to turn it into a bed & breakfast), Jes added her own luxury touches.

Amenities at 16 Elm

Guests staying at 16 Elm can explore the common rooms of the house, admiring the antique furnishings and unique architecture. In the main entryway, you can browse through photo albums from the house’s history. To the left, enjoy a complimentary drink at the honor bar and peruse the record collection in the library. To the right, the living room features a grand piano, warm leather sofas, and unique touches. Beyond the living room is the sun room, where guests will find a self-serve coffee station and ample patio furniture. Outside, the gardens are truly a sight to behold, with a large fountain serving as a focal point in the front lawn.

Guest Rooms at the Hotel

16 Elm contains 6 luxury guest suites, each with its own unique style. Yet each is spacious and well-intentionally decorated. Many of the rooms are light and airy, with scenic views of the outdoor gardens.

I loved the light turquoise tiles in our bathroom, providing a spa-like feel. The toiletries were sourced from New York’s famous Beekman 1802. Our guest room also had a large free-standing bath tub, perfect for a relaxing soak after a long day.

I had the chance to peek into some of the other suites, and one stood out from the rest. One of the suites has a bathroom entirely decked out in McKenzie Child decor.

Jes currently has plans to add additional guest suites along the side of the property. The suites would have a private backyard, each with its own outdoor entrance and patio. Construction has begun and the new suites will be available for rent soon.

Things to Do in Trumansburg

One of the greatest things about staying at 16 Elm is that the hotel is just a short walk away from the village center. And when I say short, I mean short. Main Street is a tenth of a mile from the hotel. Which means guests can easily walk to the quaint shops and restaurants. I recommend starting your day at Gimme Coffee and ordering one of their seasonal specials. Then do some shopping at the local boutiques like Sundrees. Grab lunch at Trumansburg Main Street Market. Later in the evening, do some bowling at Atlas Bowl. Lastly, end with a nightcap at Garrett’s Brewing.

Plus, Taughannock Falls, one of New York’s most famous waterfalls, is a short drive away. As is the educational Cayuga Nature Center. Also nearby? Several of the Cayuga Lake wineries — which are all dog-friendly!
