Women-Owned Businesses in Oswego County Making an Impact

Last updated on June 23, 2024.

There is not much I love more than supporting locally owned businesses. But when they are minority-owned, it makes it that much more satisfying. Especially women-owned. Because across the country, only roughly 40% of businesses are owned by women. And in New York State, it’s less than one-third. So let’s continue to celebrate women by highlighting these women-owned businesses in Oswego County. Restaurants, spas, shops, and more. These entrepreneurial women are making an impact in their communities.

Of course, these are just some of the brick-and-mortar woman-owned small businesses in Oswego County that are outside the city of Oswego. (Here is a great list of women-owned businesses in the city.) There are plenty more worth noting, including many that operate at home or remotely. If you know of a women-owned business in Oswego County worth mentioning, please let me know!

North Shore Coffee & Tea Company

I stumbled across this adorable café in Bernhard’s Bay after an overnight stay at nearby Vanderkamp. The cheerful yellow exterior of North Shore Coffee & Tea Company is so inviting, we had to stop in for breakfast. Inside the historic building, I was rather surprised to find shelves lines with products from local artisans. Pottery, jams and jellies, toys, dishes, and more adorn the shelves left behind from the former country store. The middle of the room features a fireplace and a selection of comfortable seating.

To the right is the café itself. Owned by the delightful Marcy Korczakowski, North Shore is named after its location on the northern shore of Oneida Lake. Inside the café, Marcy offers a variety of house-roasted coffees and loose leaf teas. Additionally, her menu has a quaint selection of oatmeal, yogurt with granola, and breakfast sandwiches. A pastry case filled with local baked goods completes the offerings.

Kathy’s Cakes

Kathy Hotaling’s love for baking goes back to days she spent as a child in the kitchen with her grandmother. She carried the lessons she learned and her passion for baking throughout her life until opening her own bakery in 2009. Since then Kathy’s Cakes has become a staple in Fulton, New York. Her shop creates both traditional cakes as well as cupcakes, cookie cakes, and ice cream cakes.

As far as cake goes, Kathy offers an impressive variety of flavors. Including some I’d never even heard of. There’s the basic flavors, of course, and her specialty carrot cake. Plus German chocolate, hummingbird (banana and pineapple spice), graham cracker, and others by request.

Additionally, Kathy creates a handful of other pastries and desserts. And after several years she expanded into an ice cream store, known today as Kathy’s Cakes & Big Dipper Ice Cream.

EM&V Boutique

When Kat VanDenburgh had her son Everett in 2018, she knew she wanted to stay home to raise him. But at the same time she wanted to be able to financially contribute to the family. So she took a chance on herself and opened up her own business. Named after her two children, Emmy and Everett, Em & V Boutique is now the most adorable little shop located in Phoenix, NY.

Kat fills the shop with a well-curated collection of women’s apparel and accessories. But customers cna shop online for even more options. Additionally, Kat added permanent jewelry to her offerings last summer. And the response has been fantastic!

The Looking Glass Salon

Two sisters are giving the village of Phoenix an added bit of country flair. Dani and Bre are the owners of The Looking Glass Salon, a desert ranch-themed salon established in 2020 in Upstate New York. The all-female team at the salon pride themselves on offering the latest and most fashionable services.

Among the services of the stylists, estheticians, and nail technicians are treatments for hair, face, and nails. Hair extensions, cuts, colors, balayage, and blowouts. Lashes, facials, waxing, teeth whitening, and permanent make-up. And finally, a full array of manicures and pedicures.

Eir Healing & Wellness

If you are looking for a place of healing and relaxation, look no further than Eir Healing & Wellness in Pulaski, NY. The center is owned by Amanda MacDowell, a licensed massage therapist and reiki master. Amanda is proud to own her own spa after graduating from the Onondaga School of Therapeutic Massage. Another massage therapist, David Brown, joins her at Eir, alongside consulting from hypnotist Dr. Corie Kohlbach.

The team provides a variety of spa services. An incredible selection of massage techniques are available, including prenatal, luxury, hot stone, minor, couples, and aromatherapy. There’s also an option for a hot oil scalp treatment. In addition to massage offerings, infrared sauna and hypnotherapy sessions are regularly available. Be sure to check their Facebook page for upcoming special events.
