Roaming Rhode Island – Part 2: Newport
Last updated on April 11, 2018.
Weβve already talked about how great Providence, Rhode Island is, so now itβs time to venture on south to Newport. Home to mansions and gorgeous ocean views, you donβt need a fortune to enjoy this beautiful city. In fact, you can get the most out of your day in Newport for roughly $20.
Newport Cliff Walk
Iβd planned to go to Newport for years, but a family emergency prevented me from completing my previous trip. Iβm so happy that I was able to finally get to there, especially with my now-husband.Β The one thing I’d always wanted to do in Newport was to complete the Cliff Walk. The walk is a 3.5-mile trail along the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean. On one side, you have the ocean, on the other side there are several gorgeous mansions to gawk at. (Yes, you can pay to tour several of these mansions for a cost, but the cliff walk itself is FREE!)
The Cliff Walk’s website nicely divides the walk into different portions and describes the ruggedness of each. I highly recommend that you look into this information before deciding to do all of the trail – there are sections that are most definitely not easily accessible, but if you’re adventurous, it’s worth it! The trail is also dog-friendly, but again, be prepared for the steeper and rockier portions, and also be on the lookout for poison ivy. If you challenge yourself to do the entire 3.5 miles, you’ll see some truly amazing sights.
After you’ve completed the trail, you may not be inclined to walk all the way back to your car parked on Memorial Boulevard. Luckily, the RIPTA trolley runs through the Newport mansion neighborhood, and even the limited schedule will pick you up at Marble House (we were so grateful to find this out!).
Australia in Newport
After our hike, we wandered around the town to see what was there. I always say that venturing through a city by foot is the best way to experience it. Just imagine the sheer joy I had when I discovered a genuine Aussie cafΓ© right near the beach! There was no doubt that we had found our stop for lunch. Megs’ Aussie Milk Bar is such a charming little restaurant, and overwhelmingly Australian in nature. From the options on the menu, to the decor filling the walls, to the Aussie chef himself, the place was perfect and made me homesick for my former temporary home.
When I was there I met Haydn, the Aussie who moved stateside to follow Megs and start up the milk bar. The food is truly authentic, and will satisfy a traveling homesick Aussie or the adventurous American who desires to experience new cultures. It would be a shame to visit and not order a meat pie – youΒ have to try one! It’s an Aussie classic. Order the chunky steak with a side of chips and a milkshake. Not only budget-friendly, but also delicious!
Newport Storm Brewery
On our way back to Providence, we made another stop – this time at Newport Storm Brewery. The thing I liked most about Newport Storm is that they not only specialize in craft beer, but also feature rum from Thomas Tew. You can choose from a beer flight or a rum flight (or both if you have a good DD!). Both flights are around ten dollars and include a souvenir glass and tour of the facility. I chose to do the rum flight because it’s a more unique experience – the three samples were from different stages in the distilling process, allowing you to really taste the changes that happen as rum is aged. Make sure this stop is on your Rhode Island itinerary!
I hope you’ve enjoyed the rest of our visit to Rhode Island.
Happy travels!

I usually enjoy walking in the foreign places and looking at the buildings of local people. It is interesting to see, how the people choose to decorate their living places in fifferent countries around the world.
dani
Yes! I totally agree. I’m planning on heading back there in a few weeks to see the houses decorated for Christmas π

We visited Newport during July 4th weekend and loved it. The mansions are so beautiful. were not able to explore from inside as we reached in evening, but just walking past them was wonderful to enjoy their beauty. We even enjoyed the Easton’s beach, though the water had so much of red sea weed.
Great you guys enjoyed the place and Aussie cafe.
dani
The mansions are amazing. Like nowhere else close by. I’ll check out the beach more next time!

Its funny, I just heard about the name of the island and without knowing exactly where in the world it is I thought it was a exotic place with palm trees haha π Now I learned something new:) Would love to try the meat pie tho!

The Cliff Walk sounds AMAZING, and even better that it’s free! I’m a big brewery girl so I would have to check out Newport Storm Brewery as well. Would love to get back to Rhode Island soon as I haven’t been since I was a kid!
